Do you have a favorite year Silver American Eagle?

For the regular bullion issues, I mean. I'm really talking about aesthetics, not value wise. I believe they make slight changes to the design every year or so. I have a 1989 SAE that seems to have a higher relief than my more recent (2009) aquisitions. The finish is also different, having more shine and being less dull. I'm not knowlegeable about design variations on SAE and was wondering if they vary this much from year to year or just every decade or so.

I prefer the older SAE's that were "shiny" rather than the current "frosty" look. Also, I don't like the subtle changes made to the font in the last few years, particularly the smaller numbering now used on the date.

I too have noticed that the earlier years do have a finer ("shinier") finish. It's very apparent when viewing a full set in an album and flipping through the pages.

I have no particular favorite, though. They are all similar enough to be the same to me in that respect.

I just bought some 2002 eagles and compared them with my others (mostly 2009). The font on the lettering is very different. I wonder if this could present a problem in a SHTF scenario, if you hand someone a few eagles of mixed years and they all look different from each other, do you think people might question their authenticity? The mint probably never expects these things to serve as circulating currency, but I wish they would settle on one design. Does anybody know why they change them so regularly?
